As we all know, most industrial facilities need some form of compressed air, whether it's to run a simple air tool or for more complicated tasks such as tyre operation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, few industries set their eyes on compressed air systems and when they do they find that they are not running it as efficiently as possible, resulting in wasted energy and higher bills. In fact, most plants that use compressed air could probably do with a new set of eyes on their system. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if you want to determine the cost of compressed air and improve the system, it is relevant to check the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local electricity tariffs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The length of the hose.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The size of the machine. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The air usage requirements of your tools.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The different variables such as altitude, temperature and relative humidity of your working environment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This directly affects energy efficiency and therefore the cost of compressed air, but if you can make at least one or two improvements to the system itself it will certainly reduce costs in the long run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to industrial environments such as bottling plants and pharmaceutical facilities, compressed air systems tend to consume more energy and operate more efficiently.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/aaa6\/3c0d4d090bcebfa98e75111e24748e216aa3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0than anything else. Compressed air is said to be one of the most expensive sources of energy and its typical efficiency can be as low as 10% -15%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It makes sense, then, that the lifetime energy cost of the energy consumed is much more expensive than the initial cost of the compressor itself, so much so that the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"\/\/www.matteicomp.com\/air-compressors\/miem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80% of total cost<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0of your compressed air system will be the electricity it consumes. For managers looking to reduce costs there is no better place to start than the compressed air system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, to achieve this, it is important to know <\/span><a href=\"\/\/tecnologiaparalaindustria.com\/en\/como-calcular-la-eficiencia-de-un-sistema-de-aire-comprimido-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>how to calculate the efficiency of a compressed air system<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and determine the cost of compressed air in industrial plants, using the following formula:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2442 aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/tecnologiaparalaindustria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Determinar-el-coste-del-aire-comprimido.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"702\" height=\"56\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecnologiaparalaindustria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Determinar-el-coste-del-aire-comprimido-18x1.png 18w, https:\/\/tecnologiaparalaindustria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Determinar-el-coste-del-aire-comprimido-150x12.png 150w, https:\/\/tecnologiaparalaindustria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Determinar-el-coste-del-aire-comprimido-300x24.png 300w, https:\/\/tecnologiaparalaindustria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Determinar-el-coste-del-aire-comprimido-390x31.png 390w, https:\/\/tecnologiaparalaindustria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Determinar-el-coste-del-aire-comprimido.png 702w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>bhp:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Engine power at full load (often higher than the engine nameplate). This power rating (horsepower) should be verified in the technical specifications of the equipment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>0.746: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversion constant between hp and kW<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Percentage of time:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Percentage of time running at the operational level. To do this, add the number of days per year your facility operates and multiply it by the number of hours the plant operates on an average working day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Percentage of full bhp load: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can look at your electricity bill and its utility will tell you what you are being charged per kilowatt-hour.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Engine efficiency:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Efficiency of the engine at this level of operation. To obtain this number, you should refer to the section of the <\/span><a href=\"\/\/www.cagi.org\/performance-verification\/data-sheets.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Compressed Air and Gas Institute (CAGI) performance data sheet<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and look in row 7 where you will find a number expressed as a percentage next to \"Nominal efficiency of the drive motor\". <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Here is an example for determining the cost of compressed air in industrial plants using the formula described above.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let's say you are trying to calculate the cost of a 200 hp compressor with a full load bhp of 215 hp, and you run it for 5,000 hours per year. How?
